Not All Financial Planners Are Created Equal

To earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification and remain certified as a CFP® Professional, financial advisors must meet the following requirements:

Education EDUCATION

They must earn a bachelor’s degree, then complete a comprehensive course of study offered by a college or university program covering CFP Board approved curriculum on the comprehensive financial planning process.

Experience EXPERIENCE

They must acquire three years of financial planning related experience, or a limited 2-year structured option, before achieving the right to use the CFP® marks.

Examination EXAMINATION

They must pass the comprehensive, two day, 10-hour CFP® Certification Exam, which tests their abilities to apply financial planning knowledge to real-life situations. The exam covers the financial planning process, tax planning, employee benefits and retirement planning, estate planning, investment management and insurance.

Ethics ETHICS

They must voluntarily ascribe to CFP Board’s code of ethics and additional requirements as mandated. This includes providing financial planning services as a fiduciary, or acting in the client’s best interest.  Learn more about the Code of Ethics at CFP.net

Business Insider

“One of the hallmarks of a CFP is that they have fiduciary responsibility when working on financial planning, which means they have to act in their clients’ best interest.”

Forbes

“(Suze) Orman unambiguously recommends a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) Certificant because it requires financial planning study, planning work experience and passage of a grueling 2 day national exam. The CFP®designation increasingly is seen as a required standard for financial advisors.”

The Wall Street Journal

“…It’s best to go with a certified financial planner (CFP), which is an instant signal of credibility…”
